Chapter Eighteen

XANDER

Xander opened his eyes and immediately closed them again as a white-hot pain lanced through his skull. He groaned and rolled over, the blankets beneath him were soft and warm and he could feel unconsciousness dragging at him once more.

He shot up, retching as the pain in his head intensified, but he ignored it. Where the fuck was he? He remembered travelling to Sylph, searching for the current location of the settlement. And then he remembered something hoisting him by the ankle and the sickening crack as he hit his head on the ground. That explained the pain then.

“Ah, you’re awake.” The voice was female, smooth and clipped. He turned to see a woman of around thirty with long, brown hair and the most verdant eyes he’d ever seen, sitting a few feet away. She stood, brushing her white trousers with her hands and began to approach him, but stopped when he reached for the sword that was no longer strapped to his waist. The white clothes, the pale skin and green eyes. And the faint vibration of power that flowed from her, reminding him of Aria. She was a Celeste. Had they been ambushed by Celeste soldiers?

“I’ll let the Queen know.” She lifted a flap in the canvas wall and disappeared, leaving Xander to study his surroundings. He was inside some sort of tent, with a row of makeshift beds and a table and chair where the dark-haired woman had been sitting.

He stood up and swayed as the pain made his vision swim.

“Easy,” came a voice from the door flap, gentle and with a soft burr. He turned to see Queen Leilani stepping into the tent, dressed in a beige, patterned smock, her long, braided hair tied at the ends with beads and feathers. “Thank you, Ainsley,” she said to the Celeste, who held the flap open. Ainsley hesitated, looking at Xander with her thick brows pinched.

“We’ll be fine, won’t we, Prince Xander?” The Queen looked at him patiently, a mild expression on her face.

He nodded, and then winced, touching a hand to the side of his head where it throbbed. “Yes, Your Majesty.”

“Good, now take a seat and let’s have a chat.”

“Where are my friends?” Xander asked without moving.

Leilani smiled indulgently, her dark-brown eyes glittering in the low light. “They’re safe. They’re helping to prepare the evening meal.” She picked up the chair Ainsley had been sitting in and brought it closer to Xander’s bed, gesturing for him to sit back down. He perched on the edge of the bed and faced her.

The Sylph Queen appeared to be around fifty, although her hair remained predominantly black with only the occasional strand of silver, unlike his own mother whose temples had been greying since she was in her mid-thirties. But where his mother’s face was unlined, Leilani’s showed the passing of time and the harsh
